Design for Open Play

Brief

To develop a construction based toy in order to promote free play in children of ages 6 to 12 years.

What does play mean exactly?

  • Play is a range of intrinsically motivated activities done for recreational pleasure and enjoyment.
  • Play occurs at all life stages, and is even seen in animals.
  • Toys are essential to the development of a child's motor, social and emotional skills.

Characteristics of free play

  • social
  • imaginative
  • natural
  • child-centric
  • creative
  • age-mixing
  • engaging

Learning via play, is the only way consistent with human evolutionary history as hunter-gatherers, because play is the means by which children learn to “make friends, overcome fears, solve problems and take control of their lives.”
  • Unstructured play allows children the freedom to explore, create and discover without predetermined rules or guidelines.
  • It has been shown to foster cognitive development while boosting physical, social and emotional development. It specifically helps creativity and imagination, problem-solving abilities and social skills

Autonomy to direct one’s time and energy without interference, input or judgement from adults is critical to children’s learning.

Ideas

Concept

The blocks are 2cm x 2cm x 2cm overall, made of colored, transparent acrylic.
The board is a transparent, securable 8x8 grid with square extrusions to insert the blocks in.
The colored blocks can be stacked on top of each  other on the grid. When viewed from above, the primary colors blend to form secondary colors.

The frame around the final images created by the children is present in order to give them a sense of achievement every time they achieve a new possibility in the game.
Both 2D and 3D explorations are possible with this board, increasing the longevity as well as learning that occurs while playing.
Easily fixable and removable 8x8 frame onto the light board, as it can be seen through a window or another light, giving a stained glass effect.
The primary colors are available in the kit, and interact to create new secondary colours, giving more opportunities for making 2D and 3D images.

Prototype

1. Components

3mm opaque white acrylic sheet used as the diffuser for the light box.
2mm acrylic laser cut into the shapes required and then stuck together with chloroform in order to stick the pieces together.
12v strip LEDs and teak wood used to make the light box.

2. Working

Colour interaction is limited with the limited materials, but evident from the top view.
