Reimagining a sandwich grill

Designing a sandwich grill, whose form is inspired by the brand SMEG and is generally user-friendly and convenient. 


Pain points


Mechanism


  • 2 sandwiches made at the same time get stuck together
  • Small heating plate
  • Trouble finding and using the clamp 
  • Precarious handling of device
  • Does not accommodate sandwiches of different thicknesses
  • Clamp has no up-down marking

Usage


  • Lack of any auditory feedback
  • No marking on the LED indicator to tell what each light means
  • LED’s are too dim in bright lighting
  • Taking out the sandwich is too hard since plates are hot

Material


  • Body is easily stained
  • Body looks cheap and breaks easily

Interface


  • Smell sticks to the device even when cleaned
  • Very hard to clean the plates
  • Risk of chipping off the nonstick coating easily with a knife
  • Too many hard-to-clean small nooks and crannies

Cleaning


  • Have to flip the bread to ensure even toasting
  • Have to repeatedly check on the toast
  • Can't set timer for cooking
  • Smoking causes worry for the user
  • Spillage when there is more cheese and sauce
  • Uneven toasting of the bread

Features


An easy to use clamp designed to make it easier to open the sandwich maker with it and to mitigate confusion.
The hinge opens up vertically before rotating, causing the pressure distribution on the sandwich to always be the same throughout its surface area.
The mechanism operates on rails inside the base of the grill and locks when closed, ensuring the upper grill does not move transversely.
Timer dial with LED on it, positioned in a way so it receives less glare when closed.
The grill open up at the top of the base. The front legs are reinforced with aluminium inside in order to hold the sandwich maker in place.
Screw covers present over the screws so as to ensure that the screws do not get dirty over time with accumulated grease.
The grill is removable, with a spring loaded pull clasp situated on the front, which then releases the grill plate inside and it can be taken off easily for cleaning.
